Nossa equipe de neurologistas, psiquiatras, biólogos, psicólogos e outros especialistas estudam o desenvolvimento do sistema nervoso e seu funcionamento em condições normais e patológicas.

A pesquisa em neurociências é um dos carros-chefe do IDOR, desde a sua concepção. Uma das principais vertentes dessa área de pesquisa é o uso de células reprogramadas e organoides cerebrais para estudo do desenvolvimento e de doenças que acometem o sistema nervoso central. Células epiteliais extraídas da urina ou da pele de voluntários são induzidas a voltar ao estágio embrionário de células-tronco, capazes de se transformar em qualquer tecido humano, incluindo células do cérebro. Cultivadas em laboratório, essas células formam organoides cerebrais – também conhecidos como mini-cérebros – que permitem estudar em detalhe o desenvolvimento do sistema nervoso central e, também, o impacto de vírus como Zika e Sars-Cov-2, a manipulação de genes e os efeitos de medicamentos sobre o funcionamento do tecido nervoso.

Outra linha de pesquisa importante desenvolvida pelo IDOR na área neurociência é a de neuroimagem, em particular aplicada ao estudo da plasticidade cerebral, isto é, da capacidade que o cérebro humano tem de se adaptar a situações adversas. A integração entre os resultados de exames de imagens e dados clínicos, genéticos e laboratoriais permite estudar as doenças do sistema nervoso central de forma aprofundada, em três vertentes principais: doenças do neurodesenvolvimento, reabilitação e plasticidade no envelhecimento.

Com uso de exames de ressonância magnética funcional, os pesquisadores conseguem identificar as rotas de conexão entre as diferentes partes do cérebro saudável e em situações patológicas. Entre as condições estudadas estão a disgenesia do corpo caloso, os acidentes vasculares cerebrais e a síndrome do membro fantasma, que pode surgir após uma amputação.

Cientistas do IDOR estudam, ainda, novas técnicas capazes de ajudar pacientes a recuperarem suas funções cerebrais. Uma das técnicas estudadas é o neurofeedback, que usa a ressonância magnética funcional para mostrar aos pacientes sua atividade cerebral e estimulá-los a controlar essa atividade. 

O estudo de transtornos de aprendizagem e possíveis intervenções também faz parte do rol de pesquisas do IDOR voltadas à neurociência. Um exemplo é o desenvolvimento de um software  que visa auxiliar crianças neurotípicas e com dislexia e outros transtornos no aprendizado da leitura.

No Centro de Neuropsicologia Aplicada (CNA), o IDOR combina pesquisa científica e atendimento clínico, oferecendo serviço de investigação neuropsicológica a crianças, adolescentes e adultos com suspeita de transtornos de aprendizagem e atenção, problemas comportamentais e dificuldades de memória, entre outros. A equipe multidisciplinar do CNA lidera projetos de pesquisa sobre transtorno do déficit de atenção com hiperatividade e doença de Alzheimer.
