Modern medicine increasingly demands integration with technological advancements in health sciences. This Transoral Robotic Surgery program was designed to offer an update on one of the key tools for high-precision surgery: the DaVinci® platform, produced by Intuitive Surgical – CA.
Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) refers to a set of surgical procedures performed through the oral cavity in a robot-assisted manner using the DaVinci® platform. It is used for treating both benign and malignant pathologies. The robotic technology offers the surgeon a three-dimensional view of the tissues with high definition and magnification. The use of articulated instruments allows movements with an amplitude of up to 270º, providing precision and skill in executing the surgical technique.
TORS was initially described as a minimally invasive technique for the treatment of oropharyngeal cancer, representing a major advancement in terms of functional outcomes and postoperative recovery. The use of TORS in treating patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea—who do not adapt to Positive Pressure Therapy (CPAP) due to hypopharyngeal and supraglottic obstruction—is already well-established in the literature. The goal in this pathology is the resection of soft tissues, which may include the lingual tonsil and, possibly, the tongue base musculature, along with supraglottoplasty to prevent epiglottic collapse.
Hands-on course in trans-oral surgery, with a review of head and neck anatomy and training on DaVinci® platform.
The core of the Transoral Surgery Course — including all in-person practical training — is delivered entirely in English, ensuring accessibility for international students. Although some complementary content (such as manuals and select recorded lectures) is currently available only in Portuguese, this does not hinder learning, as these materials are not central to the course.
By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
– Recognize anatomical limits that define safety parameters for performing transoral robotic surgery;
– Properly indicate this procedure (patient selection), a crucial decision-making process for successful treatment;
– Develop the technical skills necessary to perform transoral surgery using the DaVinci® platforms (Si, X, and Xi);
– Practice essential criteria for patient positioning, exposure, and docking to carry out TORS safely and effectively, making this technique a differentiating factor in the specialty.
– Training on simulators and robotic platform;
– Opportunity to discuss with experienced professionals in the field;
– Case discussions and video reviews;
– Live surgery monitoring and subsequente follow-up;
– In-service / hands-on practice using 3D anatomical models.

Units
In addition to expanding its areas of activity, IDOR is also extending its geographical reach. In Rio de Janeiro, besides its headquarters in Botafogo, it currently has a large space within Hospital Glória D’Or dedicated to clinical research. Moreover, it has established units in São Paulo, Salvador, and Brasília, which work in an integrated way in research, education, and innovation. IDOR also extends its research to other Brazilian capitals, leveraging the structure of the Rede D’Or network in this process.
