A área de Hepatologia da Rede D’Or foi criada a partir da demanda por protocolos bem fundamentados para o atendimento aos pacientes com doenças hepáticas e levou ao desenvolvimento desta área de pesquisa no IDOR. Entre os temas explorados estão a doença hepática gordurosa não alcoólica, que está associada a maus hábitos alimentares, à diabetes e à obesidade. Embora seja, em grande parte dos casos, assintomática, a doença pode levar à cirrose e à insuficiência do fígado. Por isso, cientistas do IDOR procuram formas de realizar o diagnóstico precoce do problema e evitar a evolução para casos mais graves.
Outra linha de pesquisa importante nesta área é o estudo da hepatotoxicidade, isto é, do efeito que o uso de diferentes substâncias – especialmente ervas e medicamentos – pode ter sobre a saúde do fígado. Atualmente, os materiais disponíveis para consulta sobre o tema são aqueles desenvolvidos fora do Brasil, o que limita muito o entendimento dos casos locais. Por isso, a equipe do IDOR trabalha para levantar dados e gerar conhecimento sobre a hepatotoxicidade no contexto nacional, de forma a poder contribuir para uma melhora da saúde de nossa população. Os resultados poderão embasar a tomada de decisão das equipes médicas da RDSL e de outros serviços de saúde.
A equipe de hepatologia está envolvida, também, em ensaios clínicos com novas drogas para doenças como a hepatite B e em projetos de pesquisa sobre hepatite C e tumores de fígado.
