Terapia Celular

Sediado na Bahia, o Centro de Biotecnologia e Terapia Celular (CBTC) do IDOR desenvolve pesquisas translacionais que possam alcançar impacto positivo na prática clínica.
Uma de suas linhas de pesquisa envolve os transtornos do espectro autista. Partindo do mapeamento genético de crianças com autismo na região de Salvador, os cientistas vêm estudando as alterações genéticas associadas a essa condição. Com uso de células-tronco de pluripotência induzida e organoides cerebrais, a equipe estuda como essas mutações genéticas impactam o desenvolvimento cerebral e procuram desenvolver novos métodos para reverter ou abrandar os transtornos do espectro autista por meio da terapia gênica e do uso de medicações à base de cannabis.

Na área de oncologia, os projetos do CBTC incluem o estudo dos mecanismos celulares envolvidos no desenvolvimento de metástases e na manutenção de células-tronco tumorais em pacientes com carcinoma escamocelular. Nos dois casos, os cientistas estão em busca de alvos para novas terapias antitumorais e tratamentos capazes de deter a disseminação do câncer.

O CBTC também trabalha para o desenvolvimento de novas terapias com células-tronco para recuperação neurológica de pacientes com lesões na medula (paraplégicos e tetraplégicos) e para o tratamento de anemia falciforme e outras doenças genéticas. Por fim, o grupo se dedica à criação de terapias celulares para tratar doenças crônicas do fígado e do coração, além do estudo dos mecanismos celulares do envelhecimento e ao desenvolvimento de estratégias para amenizar ou reverter os danos neurológicos que o acompanham.
