A vigilância epidemiológica é o principal objetivo desta área de pesquisa, que trabalha com o atendimento de pacientes com neuroinfecções e arboviroses como dengue, zika e chikungunya nos hospitais da RDSL. 

Durante a pandemia de covid-19, a equipe se dedicou quase exclusivamente à nova doença, participando de ensaios clínicos de vacinas e propostas terapêuticas (veja o quadro O IDOR na pandemia de covid-19).  Com a estrutura montada, o setor pretende seguir participando de novos ensaios clínicos para vacinas contra outras doenças.
